The Tennessee Eastman Hiking & Canoeing Club (TEHCC) has named Joe Poehlmann, APEs’ Class II-III Cruise Director, as “Paddler of the Year.” The annual award, which has been presented since 1990, recognizes exemplary service and active involvement in TEHCC, APEs and the regional paddling community.

“Joe planned and hosted many new trips last year. He’s very patient with new paddlers and always looking to give back," says APEs’ TEHCC Liaison Andy Steffan. “He’s humble and has a passion for getting people involved, growing the club and paddling community, and helping others increase excitement for the sport.”

“Joe has made great contributions to the East Tennessee paddling community over the last year,” adds APEs president Brad Eldridge. “In his volunteer position as a Class II-III river trip leader for APEs, Joe organized many trips on the lower Nolichucky, Hiawassee, Tuckasegee, French Broad, Nantahala and Pigeon rivers. His efforts have given many beginner and advancing paddlers opportunities to refine their skills in a qualified group setting, meet and network with other paddlers, and have FUN!”

Joe started paddling at 17 and went to Outward Bound in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota for 24 days—and it changed his life. He switched from canoes to kayaks in 2010, when his boys went into the military. After taking vacations to paddle on the Nantahala and Hiawassee Rivers, he made the decision to relocate to the Knoxville, TN, area in 2019.

Joe is a true “people person” who loves the outdoors and leading trips. His enthusiasm for paddling is infectious, and his willingness to spend many summer weekends leading paddle trips for APEs has been a huge benefit for the community. The award was presented by Andy Steffan on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the TEHCC Spring Dinner Meeting in Kingsport, TN.
