Join the APEs April 13-14, 2024 for this fun and informative two-day kayak fundamentals class on the Nolichucky River in Erwin, TN. This introductory class will focus on all the basics to get you started on your whitewater journey.

Topics covered include: boating terminology, safe lifting and loading of your boat, proper boat outfitting to be comfortable and safe, wet exit technique and practice, posture and edge control, torso rotation, turning strokes, forward strokes and steering strokes.

The first day will start on flat water and conclude with a short down river paddle. The second day will focus on boat maneuvers, eddy catching, ferries and peel outs, river reading and on-water group management.

Required gear: personal flotation device (PFD), whitewater kayak outfitted with floatation, helmet, spray skirt, paddle, appropriate clothing layers (dress to swim; consider non-cotton materials), closed-toe shoe, nose plugs, snacks and water.

Suggested gear:  sun screen, throw rope and paddle jacket.

Lead instructor: Trey Moore of the Eddyhopper Workshop is an ACA Instructor Trainer for Kayaking and has over a decade’s experience teaching on some of America’s most iconic waterways.
